The Village of Joy online entertainment magazine has listed the 50 strangest and most peculiar buildings in the world – and three bizarre libraries made the list. No, the Helsinki Central Library is not one of the shortlisted freaky buildings. Instead, the high-ranking strange sights come from Kansas and San Diego in the US and Minsk in Belarus.

New library becoming a reality

The Central Library building is almost ready!

The Central Library stands firm. The spacious and bright lobby invites visitors and is an open window towards wonderful Töölönlahti. Multiple entrances across the building draw in library enthusiasts and random travellers. All the different floors blaze with various colours and themes, the stairways race upward overlapping each other towards a high-rise platform that offers a stunning view down to the lobby. The highest level hosts a scenic café and a beautiful garden.

The Friends’ Library is a place where people can share relaxing book adventures.

When visiting foreign bookstores, many Finns often whinge: why don’t we have bookstores like these in Finland? You could read on the couch with a mug of hot coffee, meet friends over a glass of wine and share book recommendations, take your time, see exhibitions, maybe come in late at night.
